James’s brother Karl is a train engineer for KiwiRail, and we were lucky enough to ride in the cab with him round-trip on the Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass coal train on 27 March 2013.
Noel took a lot of photos — approximately 400 — and I’ll be sharing a few over the next few blogs with you, so those of you who have never been on the train to the West Coast, or even to New Zealand, can see our magnificent countryside.
It was overcast when we left Christchurch, so many of those pictures are not as good as the ones when the clouds cleared as we approached the Southern Alps.
